Focus on Wellness
“Wellness” has become the new watchword in our Champ’s Café restaurants, in our classrooms and in our school system. Seeing the fast rise in obesity rates in our nation, the federal government mandated that every local school district develop and implement its own Wellness Policy. Follow this link to review our District Wellness Policy.
Charlotte County Public Schools recognizes that childhood obesity is a serious problem that can and must be addressed by everyone: families, teachers, principals, school staff, including nurses, food service workers and paraprofessionals, physicians, and our entire community.
In order to create and maintain a healthy school environment, our have implemented some changes, including non-food rewards to celebrate success, daily recess for most every elementary-aged student, and healthy and nutritious foods as snacks at school. Parents can support this healthy school environment by refraining from bringing "fast food" to school and by helping their child celebrate a birthday at school in a non-food way.
Families can jump on the "Wellness Bandwagon" at home by offering fruits and vegetables as snacks and with meals to increase vitamins and minerals, and by encouraging more physical activity and less TV and computer time. There are many benefits to physical activity. Exercise promotes brain cell growth, reduces anxiety and stress and raises the level of many of the chemicals that stop hunger.
Along with reading, math and other academics, Charlotte County Public Schools recognizes nutrition education and physical education as important areas of learning. We know that helping our students develop healthy habits is paramount for lifelong wellness. We also know that healthy students learn better and that leads to our vision of “Student Success!”Live well, Learn well, Eat well, Be well !
