The Division of Learning

Curriculum

In its most literal sense, a curriculum is a school's course(s) of study. In today's world of teaching and learning, it is difficult to address curriculum without also including instruction and assessment in the same conversation. While curriculum is the "what" of teaching and learning, instruction is the "how." Assessment is critical because it not only measures the level of the student's mastery of the skill or content knowledge, it is also used to modify the curriculum and instruction so students learn at a higher level.

In Florida, the curriculum is driven by the Sunshine State Standards. These statewide learning outcome statements are currently under revision and are being replaced over time by the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. These revisions are being made to keep Florida educationally competitive, not only with students from other states in the country, but also with students globally.

In Charlotte County, we adhere to the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (where developed) and use state of the art, research based instructional materials as the basis for our curriculum. Teachers are provided professional development and coaching in the use of highly effective, proven instructional strategies to create classroom activities that are rigorous and relevant in an environment that sustains high trust relationships between students and teacher. Multiple assessment tools are used to gather data on student mastery of the curriculum and teachers are becoming more skilled in the analysis and application of that data to drive instructional practice in their classrooms.
