Federal Programs in Charlotte County

No Child Left Behind (NCLB)

Annual Yearly Progress (AYP)

Annual Yearly Progress, or AYP, is a designation under the Federal Government's No Child Left Behind law (NCLB) that requires schools to meet specific academic achievement benchmarks. In the academic areas of Reading, Math, Science, and Writing, student progress is measured by State tests (FCAT). Other benchmarks that are required include the percentage of students tested, a 1% or higher increase in writing scores, and a 1% or higher increase in the graduation rate. These benchmarks are measured for the district and for each school, as well as by all the sub-groups in the schools and the district. The sub-group categories include: White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, Economically Disadvantaged, English Language Learners and Students with Disabilities.

In order for a school or district to make AYP, 100% of the benchmarks must be met by all subgroups.

If any school does not make AYP, the school receives interventions from the District or the State, according to the Differentiated Accountability Matrix. Differentiated Accountability is a program that merges the Florida School Grades program and the Federal NCLB Annual Yearly Progress program. Differentiated Accountability ranks schools based on the percentage of AYP goals that are attained, and also according to the school grade earned in the State accountability program.
